Abstract
Zoospore ultrastructure is known for Monoblepharis, Monoblepharella, Oedogo niomyces, and Harpochytrium, four of the five genera of the Monoblepharidal es, Ultrastructure of zoospores of Gonapodya polymorpha, a representative o f the fifth genus, was investigated. The zoospore ultrastructure of G. poly morpha strongly resembles the zoospore ultrastructure of the other four gen era, confirming that Gonapodya is correctly placed in the Monoblepharidales . The most important feature uniting the five genera is the structure of th e flagellar apparatus. The transition zone plug found in the flagella of th e other four genera is not present in Gonapodya. Paraxonemal structures in the flagellum of Gonapodya, the first reported in the Chytridiomycetes, are unlike the paraxonernal structures found in a variety of protists. Monoble pharella is removed from the Gonapodyaceae and placed in the Monoblepharida ceae because it more closely resembles Monoblepharis, both morphologically and ultrastructurally, than it does Gonapodya.
