The paper discusses the resolution of imaging by the sampling filter. Accor
ding to the given approach the imaging resolution of the filter depends on
a transmittance of a single sampling element and is the same as the resolut
ion of a lens of a proper pupil function. The presented theoretical descrip
tion which utilises the paraxial Fresnel approximation of diffraction is co
nfirmed by numerical simulations comparing imaging properties of the sampli
ng filter with imaging abilities of lenses of different pupil functions.
