The doubly odd nucleus Lu-170 has been studied using the Dy-164(B-11,5n) re
action at 63 MeV bombarding energy. A near yrast level scheme was construct
ed comprising 11 rotational bands. Among them, the <(pi)over tilde>h(9/2) x
<(nu)over tilde>i(13/2) staggered semidecoupled structure has been establi
shed up to I = 30 (h) over bar. The doubly decoupled band <(pi)over tilde>h
(9/2)x<(nu)over tilde>1/2(-)[521] and a Newby shifted K = 0 band were also
found. A set of three bands resembles a band structure present in the neigh
boring odd-A isotopes. One of these shows a striking similarity in transiti
on energies to the <(pi)over tilde>7/2(+)[404] band in Lu-171 and hence thi
s pair has been cataloged as twin bands. However, their extracted moments o
f inertia appear to be very different and therefore they cannot be consider
ed identical bands in the usual sense. [S0556-2813(99)00509-9].
