High-spin states in Ta-170 have been studied via Tb-159(O-16,5n gamma)Ta-17
0 reaction through excitation functions, K x-y, and gamma-gamma-t coinciden
ce measurements. Three rotational bands have been identified which consist
of two strongly coupled bands and a semidecoupled one. The quasiparticle co
nfigurations of these bands and the interpretation of experimental results
are discussed based on the existing knowledge of neighboring odd-mass and o
dd-odd nuclei and in the framework of the cranked-shell model. Low-spin sig
nature inversion in the pi 9/2(-)[514] x nu 5/2(+)[642] and pi 1/2(-)[541]
x nu 5/2(+)[642] bands are discussed. A delay (reduction) of the band-cross
ing frequency is observed in the pi 1/2(-)[541] x nu 5/2(+)[642] (pi 5/2(+)
[402] x nu 5/2(+)[642]) band. This configuration-dependent crossing frequen
cy is discussed in comparison with the AB crossing frequencies in the relat
ed bands of neighboring odd-Z isotopes. [S0556-2813(99)04809-8].
