Using a flat-crystal x-ray spectrometer designed for low-energy photons fro
m radioactive sources, the K-shell internal ionization and excitation (K-II
E) in the beta decay of S-35 has been investigated by measuring chlorine K
x rays from carefully purified S-35 sources. We have succeeded for the firs
t time in obtaining a high-resolution spectrum of the K alpha x-ray group e
mitted after the beta decay of S-35, which consists of at least six lines,
indicating that multiple ionizations and excitations including L and M shel
ls are dominant in the K-IIE process during the beta decay of low-Z nuclide
s, The K-hole creation probability for S-35 determined is (2.8 +/- 0.5) x 1
0(-3) per decay, which agrees well with the previous result by Rubinson and
Howland within the standard deviation. The comparison with available theor
etical calculations is also given, [S0556-2813(99)04209-0].
