Abstract
The density of accessible levels at low spin in the (He-3, alpha gamma) rea ction has been extracted for the Dy-162, Er-166, and Yb-172 nuclei. The nuc lear temperature is measured as a function of excitation energy in the regi on of 0-6 MeV. The temperature curves reveal structures indicating the onse t of new degrees of freedom. The heat capacity of the nuclear system is dis cussed within the framework of a canonical ensemble.
