Two equivalents of dfmpe [dfmpe = 1,2-bis(bis(trifluoromethyl)phosphin
o)ethane] reacts with tris(triphenylphosphine)hydridochlororuthenium(I
I) to yield the ruthenium complex RuHCl(dfmpe)(2). Reduction of RuHCl(
dfmpe)(2) using sodium borohydride affords the new complex RuH2(dfmpe)
(2) in high yield. Ultraviolet irradiation of RuH2(dfmpe)(2) under 1 a
tm of deuterium gas results in the formation of RuD2(dfmpe)(2); howeve
r, irradiation in the presence of organic substrates including arenes,
alkanes, alkenes and alkynes fails to produce new organometallic spec
ies.
