Ventral herniation of the abdominal wall in mares is an uncommon but seriou
s complication which can present itself during late pregnancy. The followin
g study reports four cases, giving a description of the diagnosis, treatmen
t, development and prognosis of the condition. In its preparation, practica
l case studies and published literature were discussed and compared. It was
noted that Hernia graviditatis occurs particularly in multiparous mares du
ring the last third of gestation, in which the animals concerned have an av
erage age of 12 years. Age and foaling-related degeneration of the abdomina
l musculature may predispose a mare to this condition. Even if in general g
ood health, it should always be taken into account that a sudden potentiall
y fatal deterioration in the condition of the animal may occur. Therefore,
veterinary supervision of the mare until parturition is recommended in each
case.
