Neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering studies have been carried
out on a single crystal of BaCo0.82Ni0.18S2. Analyses of the form fac
tor show that the system is in the high spin state. Two-dimensional na
ture of the magnetic system has clearly been shown from the q-dependen
ce of the magnetic excitations both above and below T-N. It is shown t
hat a random phase treatment can roughly describe characteristics of t
he magnetic excitations above T-N.
