Two distinct hemocyte populations are determined in the hemolymph of t
he triatomine bug Triatoma infestans Klug, oenocytoids and plasmatocyt
es, and their independent origin from separate stem cells is shown. Bo
th hemocyte populations differ considerably in their morphology, ultra
structure and lectin-binding properties. While oenocytoids are quite u
niform with easily definable cells which do not to bind any assayed le
ctin, the plasmatocytes are a very polymorphic population possessing s
everal morphological types and displaying a positive reactivity with l
ectins.
