Power requirements for spinner-type spreaders broadcasting poultry litter a
nd wood ash were analyzed based on both experimental data and an analytical
method. Only power for spreading consisting of spinner and conveyor power
was considered in this study. The spinner power was determined using the me
asured hydraulic pressure drop across the two spinner motors while the conv
eyor power was calculated based on a formula developed for a typical spinne
r-type spreader. The average power requirements for spreading poultry litte
r and wood ash at different flow rates and spinner speed were determined. T
he maximum power requirements for spreading poultry litter and wood ash at
a material flow rate of 1.52 m(3)/min and spinner speed of 830 rpm are clos
e to 19 kW. Of that total, spinner power requirements accounted for approxi
mately 55% and conveyor power requirements accounted for the other 45%.
