Abstract
While researching the characteristics of tectonic ambient stress field, we have found that the tectonic ambient shear stress value tau(0) has very str ong influence on the peak ground velocity (PGV). A new predictive equation CLB97V (the equation (3) in text) has been obtained by quantitatively intro ducing tau(0) value into the predictive equation of PGV. CLB97V is proved t o be available by observational data with Delta = 5-250km in China and USA. We have considered that the predominant frequencies of the velocity record ings are different for large, intermediate and small earthquakes: the large r the earthquake, the lower the predominant frequency. So the attenuation f or small one is rapider. Thus CLB97V is available not only for large earthq uakes but also for intermediate and small earthquakes. If different tectoni c ambient shear stress fields for different regions all over the world are considered, CLB97V can be used for all regions.
