Tinea nigra, a superficial fungal infection caused by Phaeoannellomyces wer
neckii, presents as a hyperpigmented, nonscaling macule of Variable size an
d shape. Typically lacking induration, erythema, or pruritus, these "ink sp
ot" lesions may resemble junctional nevi or malignant melanoma. Rapid, noni
nvasive diagnosis can be provided by potassium hydroxide examination, demon
strating numerous large, dematiaceous hyphae.
