Samarium(II) iodide has been employed to promote a sequential intramol
ecular nucleophilic acyl substitution/intramolecular ketyl olefin coup
ling cyclization sequence to provide bicyclic, tricyclic, and spiro-fu
sed oxygen heterocycles in excellent yield and with high diastereosele
ctivity.
