D. Melamed et al., STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SOLID SELF-ORDERED THIN-FILMS OF ZINC(II) AND PALLADIUM(II) OCTAKIS(BETA-DECOXYETHYL)PORPHYRIN, Journal of physical chemistry, 98(36), 1994, pp. 8971-8976
Raman spectra of zinc(II) and palladium(II) octakis(beta-decoxyethyl)p
orphyrins as thin solid films in a photoelectrochemical cell were comp
ared to those of the same compounds in dilute CS2. Polaization measure
ments indicate that both porphyrins distort from D-4h symmetry upon ag
gregation to the solid state. The orientation of the porphyrins within
the thin films was examined by polarized Raman spectroscopy, indicati
ng the planes of the porphyrin molecules are tilted about 35 degrees f
rom the substrate surface. X-ray diffraction studies of an ordered thi
n film of the zinc(II) octakis(beta-decoxyethyl)porphyrin indicate tha
t the film is highly oriented and suggest an interporphyrin distance o
f ca. 4 Angstrom.
