A novel acylated triterpenoid saponin, designated pithecelloside, is isolat ed from the seeds of Pithecellobium Juice and characterised as 3-O-[alpha-L -arabinopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1 --> 6)-beta-D-gluco pyranosyl] 21 beta-O-[(2'E)-6'-hydroxy-2',6'-dimethylocta-2',7'-dienoyl]aci dic acid 1.
