Differential thermal analysis (DTA) has been used to study transient liquid
phase sintering in Fe-Cu-Ti. Three different liquid phases formed and disa
ppeared by interdiffusion whilst the compacts were heated to 1350 degrees C
. DTA of the sintering process can give important information on the sinter
ing behaviour of the system, mainly the appearance and disappearance of the
liquid phases, not obtainable by conventional metallographic and dilatomet
ric examination. It has also been shown that this method is of practical in
terest because it enables the sintering conditions to be optimised. (C) 199
