Abstract
Considering flaw sizes reported in the literature, linear elastic fracture mechanics does not seem to apply to the failure analysis of paper structure s with a flaw. The failure stress of such structures cannot be predicted us ing fracture energy measurements or crack tip plasticity corrections. In co ntrast, a cohesive softening model gives good agreement with the measured f ailure stresses without adjustable parameters.
