We present a precise method of measuring the displacement of soft tissue us
ing a probe with a compliant needle. The displacement vector is set using t
wo needles which are fixed in the tissue. The new method was applied to mea
sure the displacement of a porcine meniscus in the transverse plane under j
oint load. The meniscus moved 0.5 - 1 mm outward under joint load of 600 N
in 2 seconds. Then, slow displacement due to creep deformation followed. Th
e results show approximate agreement with previous predictions by computer
simulation and strain measurement.
