This paper represents the capacitated multiproduct, multistage manufacturin
g planning problem using a special network flow model that takes into accou
nt the special structure of the manufacturing systems. This approach encour
ages the utilization of customized tools for solving actual industry optimi
zation problems that are of large dimension. Taking into account this chara
cteristic, it is possible to have a more detailed representation of the phy
sical system. One example shows the importance of time production coordinat
ion. The best performance of the customized algorithm compared to commercia
l tools is confirmed by an application to a mid-term scheduling of a spring
industry.
