Tj. Swim et Ca. Surra, Role of gender in behavioral interdependence and relationship outcomes forpremarital couples, SEX ROLES, 41(1-2), 1999, pp. 49-70
One aspect of gender identity, preferences for gender-related activities, w
as examined using gender and interdependence theories for a sample of 59, p
redominately Caucasian, premarital couples. Respondents completed interview
s in which they reported on their preferences for activities, relationship
satisfaction, other relationship dimensions, and actual performance of the
activities. Groups of couples were created by using median splits to reflec
t the similarity and traditionality of coupled partners' preferences for ge
nder-related activities. Two main findings were apparent: (a) couples in wh
ich both partners liked the activities and couples in which both partners h
eld traditional preferences had positive relationship outcomes, and (b) cou
ples in which both partners disliked the activities had the least favorable
outcomes.
