We report excitation spectroscopy data which show direct evidence of longit
udinal acoustic (LA) phonon assisted absorption to the 1S-quadrupole state
in Cu2O. A special excitation geometry is used that allows the suppression
of the resonant quadrupole excitation. The absorption cross-section is moni
tored via the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon assisted luminescence of the
1S state. A clear anti-Stokes absorption down to 4 K is observed. (C) 1999
