Alongside geometrical parameters such as width, thickness, thickness profil
e, flatness and surface finish, the coil face profile obtained during coili
ng is one of the main quality features in hot strip production. A project f
unded by the ECSC has the objective of developing and field-testing a multi
-variable control concept for optimizing coiling quality during hot strip c
oiling. A system for measuring the coil face profile has been set up on the
wide hot strip mill at Thyssen Krupp Stahl's Dortmund plant. This system c
onsists of a travelling laser triangulation sensor for linear sensing of th
e face profile of the wound coil. The system has been installed on one coil
er since the middle of the year. It is to be used in the field for fundamen
tal research with the aim of determining the influence exerted by the finis
hing train, cooling line and coiler on the coiling results during hot strip
coiling.
