In 1999 the Institute of Iron- and Steel Technology of the Technical Univer
sity and Mining College in Freiberg looks back upon a history of 125 years.
Since 1874 metallurgical engineers and material specialists have been educ
ated here to face practical demands. All previous heads of the institute ha
ve focused their research on different topics. Improvements have been achie
ved concerning hot and cast metal, steel, plant engineering and materials s
cience and analysis. Nearly all steel-applying companies have raised their
demands towards higher material quality at low levels of energy and raw mat
erial consumption. The institute comes up to these expectations with modern
equipment for teaching and research as well as a number of contacts with p
roducing companies. International co-operation allows for a broad view acro
ss the border for students and engineers.
In addition to the anniversary celebration, the 3rd steel workshop from Oct
ober 4 to 5, 1999, has provided the opportunity for a number of companies t
o introduce themselves and intensify their contacts to the university. Last
but not least, a number of national and international guests took the chan
ce to participate in the discussion on current developments concerning the
production and processing of steel.
