M. Zabalgoitia et al., DISPARITY BETWEEN DIASTOLIC MITRAL FLOW CHARACTERISTICS AND LEFT-VENTRICULAR MASS IN ESSENTIAL-HYPERTENSION, The American journal of cardiology, 79(9), 1997, pp. 1255
Because left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and aging have been associat
ed with abnormal LV relaxation, this study evaluated the impact of LV
mass on the filling patterns derived by Doppler in a large population
aged greater than or equal to 50 years. Results suggest that in essent
ial hypertension the intrinsic myocardial composition is more importan
t than cardiac hypertrophy in determining LV diastolic properties. Thi
s apparent discrepancy between LV mass and diastolic filling patterns
highlights the difficulty in establishing the diagnosis of diastolic d
ysfunction in elderly hypertensives.
