We report radiological and histological investigations of a patient who pre
sented with the masseteric hypertrophy. Sections of the patient's masseter
muscles were also investigated using a series of histological techniques. T
he histological and morphometric analysis of the patient's masseter muscle
showed numerous small fibres, which indicated that the masseteric enlargeme
nt was not the result of classic fibre hypertrophy. We suggest that the use
of the term 'hypertrophy' in this condition may be misleading.
