This work was conducted in order to study the atmospheric dispersion of gas
eous effluents emitted by a cement kiln that uses coal as its source of fue
l. The pollutants. analyzed were gaseous compounds (carbon monoxide, sulfur
dioxide, and nitrogen oxides) and particulate matter. The simulation of at
mospheric dispersion was made possible through the ISC-ST2 software develop
ed by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The required experimental dat
a were: the attributes of the stacks (the number of stacks, their location,
height and internal diameter), meteorological data, volumetric flow rate a
nd temperature of gaseous effluents, as well as the concentration of gaseou
s compounds and particulate matter, the location and elevation of the recep
tors and the location of the buildings within the industrial complex. The 2
4-h and annual concentrations of each pollutant were evaluated and these va
lues were compared to current environmental standards. A study was also com
pleted regarding the sensitivity of the parameters of the atmospheric dispe
rsion model.
