H. Watanabe et al., PHYSIOLOGICAL BACKGROUND OF ENURESIS TYPE-I - A PRELIMINARY-REPORT, Scandinavian journal of urology and nephrology, 31, 1997, pp. 7-10
The physiological background of enuresis Type I, which is due to a mil
d arousal dysfunction, has been investigated in two studies, one in ra
ts and one in children with Type I enuresis. The results of these inve
stigations suggest that in this type of enuresis, the fundamental arou
sal function following bladder distension, due to an arousal centre li
ke the locus coeruleus and its network, is normal. In contrast, the pr
ocess of multiplying the transient connection from light sleep to comp
lete awakening, which probably relies upon functions of the thalamus a
nd the further upper centrums, was thought to be abnormal.
