Abstract
We present a model to describe evaporative cooling of a gas of bosons, confined by an anisotropic parabolic potential. The quantum statistic s of the model is treated exactly. Among the possible evaporation mech anisms, explicit results are obtained for the case of (i) truncation o f the energy distribution and (ii) spatially selective evaporation. In both examples, the temperature is studied as a function of the number of particles and the temperature drop per evaporated particle is disc ussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
