The diamine N <^> N (N <^> N = 6-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)-6,7-dihydro-5-H-dib
enz[c,e]azepin (1)) has been prepared and characterised. It reacts with nic
kel(II) chloride and bis(benzonitrile)dichloropalladium giving the correspo
nding complexes MCl2(N <^> N) (M = Ni, 6; Pd, 7) whose crystal structures h
ave been determined. The nickel coordination in complex 6 is distorted tetr
ahedral, whereas the palladium coordination in complex 7 is square planar.
