In this paper, the use of a piezoelectric actuator to act as an active vibr
ation damper on a cutting tool is reported. The piezoelectric actuator with
an inertial mass is attached to the controlled cutting tool. The actuator
resonance can be well tuned over a wide frequency range by adjusting the si
ze of the inertial mass, so that the actuator can provide an extremely larg
e damping force to suppress undesired vibration of the cutting tool at the
resonance frequency of the actuator. Experimental results are presented to
illustrate the proposed method. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights r
