Abstract
The mesophase behaviour of lanthanum(III) tetradecanoate, La(C13H27COO)(3), (lanthanum myristate) has been studied by polarizing optical microscopy, d ifferential scanning calorimetry and high temperature X-ray diffraction. Th is metallomesogen forms an ordered lamellar solid which melts to a smectic A mesophase (SmA). Structural details of the different phases are discussed . The higher homologues of the lanthanum(III) soaps were found to have a si milar mesophase behaviour.
