C. Hernandez et al., Lipoprotein(a) and the estimation of low-density cholesterol by the formula of Friedewald: a new problem for an old equation, MED CLIN, 113(8), 1999, pp. 290-291
BACKGROUND: To evaluate the influence of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] concentrati
on an the LDL-cholesterol calculated by the Friedewald formula.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Lp(a) was determined to a worker population of 947 su
bject in order to perform a correction of LDL-cholesterol obtained by the F
riedewald formula.
RESULTS: In subjects in whom Lp(a) was > 30 mg/dl (12.9%) LDL cholesterol l
evels were overestimated 10 mg/dl at least.
CONCLUSION: Lp(a) should be considered in order to reduce Friedewald's form
ula error on the estimation of LDL-cholesterol.
