Abstract
We discuss the basic work principle of spark counters with localized discha rge. A review of the main counter characteristics as well as results of rec ent R&D is presented. Possible large scale applications for the investigati on of ion-ion collisions are discussed: FOPI- a 4 pi detector at the SIS ac celerator of GSI, Darmstadt; NA49 - a fixed target experiment at the CERN-S PS; ALICE - a dedicated heavy-ion experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Colli der (LHC).
