Luminescence from chromium-neodymium-doped lithium niobate (LiNbO3) was exp
erimentally measured to determine the degree of non-radiative energy transf
er between chromium and neodymium ions. Evidence is presented for two diffe
rent time constants for emission from chromium ions in the material, indica
ting that non-radiative transfer does occur. Differences between quasi-cont
inuous pumping and pulsed excitation are discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Scien
