Abstract
The chemical mechanism of ATP hydrolysis by nitrogenase is discussed in ter ms of results from isotopic exchange studies using [O-18(4)]-Pi, b,g-[O-18] ATP, and g-[O-18(4)]-ATP as probes of reversibility (ATP = ADP + Pi) and o f the freedom of rotation around the O-P-b bond in enzyme-bound ADP.
