A new species of aquatic frog, Telmatobius dankoi, is described in the prox
imity of Calama, Cordillera de Los Andes, northern Chile. The new taxon def
ers from their congeners by the absence of vomer, maxillary, and premaxilla
ry teeth. Both sexes present horny small thorns on the posterior third of t
he body, flanks, head, and extremities. A postfemoral fold is evident. Immu
nological and molecular differentiation between Telmatobius and Telmatobufo
is established. The taxonomic validity of Telmatobius is discussed.
