Abstract
The paper deals with the development of status consistency in the Czech Rep ublic between 1991 and 1999. First, we describe the relationships between e ducation, occupation and income during the post-communist transition. Our a nalysis describes the strengthening of the relations between basic stratifi cation measures. The described status crystallisation may, according to our hypotheses, result from the increased rates of social mobility, from chang es on the labour market and in the status attainment process, and finally f rom the increase in income inequalities. Attention is devoted to the influe nce of objective stratification scales on the subjective social status. We provide some evidence that the more consistent social status is the higher and cleans is the subjective social standing. We also explore the degree of status inconsistency in different sub-populations and conclude the analysi s with some hypotheses regarding the relationship between status consistenc y and voting behaviour. It is shown that status inconsistency increases the odds of left voting in the Czech Republic. The concluding part of the pape r raises some questions relating to the topic and suggests further tests.
