Statistical genetic mapping methods are powerful tools for finding genes th
at contribute to complex human traits. Mapping methods combine knowledge of
the biological mechanisms of inheritance and the randomness inherent in th
ose mechanisms to locate, with increasing precision, trait genes on the hum
an genome. We provide an overview of the two major classes of mapping metho
ds, genetic linkage analysis and linkage disequilibrium analysis, and relat
ed concepts of genetic inheritance. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, L
