Abstract
The optimum conditions for the excitation of wake fields by relativist ic electron bunches in a plasma are considered. The plasma and bunch p arameters corresponding to the most efficient excitation of wake field s are determined. The effect of the finite radial plasma dimension on the excitation efficiency of the wake fields is studied. The excitatio n of wake fields by a bunch propagating in a preformed vacuum channel in a plasma is analyzed.
