Several research investigations have been initiated in Nova Scotia through
private-public partnerships to examine the impact of agricultural activitie
s on surface and groundwater quality. These include 1) the evaluation of ar
tificial (constructed) wetlands for the treatment of milkhouse waste water
and manure runoff from agricultural systems under cold climate conditions,
2) the impact on subsurface drainage water quality of different rates and t
iming of manure application, 3) the impact of two carrot fertility manageme
nt systems (liquid hog manure and chemical fertilizer) on subsurface draina
ge water quality, 4) subsurface drainage water quality under composted and
fresh chicken manure as a soil amendment, 5) evaluation of alternative milk
house wastewater treatment methods, and 6) the occurrence of Hexazinone in
domestic wells adjacent to wild blueberry fields.
