Abstract
The Institute for Safety Research is one of five scientific institutes of t he Forschungszentrum Rossendorf e.V. (FZR). Safety research at Rossendorf i s based upon long years of experience in the analysis of pressurised water reactors of the Russian type WWER. The second part of the Rossendorf research report initially presents the wo rk performed in the stress analysis of components of the primary system in hypothetical breakdowns. In the material tests the Institute concentrates u pon an analysis of the deterioration of the mechanical properties of reacto r pressure vessel material sas a result of neutron radiation, and on an inv estigation of the mechanisms of neutron embrittlement by means of high reso lution processes of microstructure analysis. Then, the work carried out on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Protection and React or Safety in support of the Ukrainian Nuclear Energy Supervision Authority in the establishment of a modern nuclear power station monitoring system is introduced. Following realisation of this project, than 50 % of the nuclea r power stations installed in the Ukraine are under modern official control , with all resulting advantages for safe, trouble-free operation.
