Abstract
Two pregnane steroids, pregnane (1) and 3 beta-hydroxypregnane (2), were ox idized by fermentation with the fungus Cephalosporium aphidicola. The ferme ntation of pregnane (1) yielded 3 beta-hydroxypregnane (2) and 3 beta, 6 be ta,11 alpha-trihydroxypregnane (3), while that of 3 beta-hydroxypregnane (2 ) afforded 6 beta,11 alpha-dihydroxypregn-3,20-dione (4), 3 beta,6 beta,15 alpha-trihydroxypregn-20-one (5) and 3 beta,5 alpha,11 alpha-trihydroxypreg n-20-one (6). The metabolites are characterized by detailed physical and sp ectroscopic studies.
