Auger photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy (APECS) is a technique that pr
ovides us with unique information and a chance to gain insight into the sig
nificance of processes in the Auger spectra of atoms in solids. Hence it is
a great aid in our understanding of the Auger process in atoms where elect
ron correlations are strong. Despite the first demonstration of the techniq
ue more than 20 years ago, there are still very few working experiments. Th
e reasons why, and the ways forward are discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Scienc
