Green tea leaves were exposed to electrons at an acceleration voltage of 20
0 kV and a beam current of 8 mu A for various periods and their sterility a
nd quality were evaluated. Irradiation of electrons for 15 min or longer re
duced the microbial load to undetectable lever. Irradiation of electrons fo
r 15 min did not affect the color and aromatic components to an extent to r
educe the commercial value. The results indicate that electron irradiation
at 200 kV and 8 mu A for 15 min decontaminates tea leaves without significa
nt quality deterioration.
