We study the discovery potential of the CMS detector for the scalar leptoqu
ark pair production at the LHC. Present and future exclusion limits are con
sidered. We find that the maximal leptoquark mass reach is m similar or equ
al to 1.47 TeV for the branching ratio of Br(LQ(t) --> lq) = 100%, while fo
r Br(LQ(t) --> lq) = 50% the upper limit is 1.2 TeV for an integrated lumin
osity of 100 fb(-1). We obtain comparable results for electron and muon-typ
e leptoquarks. The pileup effect at high luminosity is discussed. (C) 1999
