Spectroscopic imaging was achieved in the midinfrared region by using a PtS
i charge coupled device camera and band-pass filters. A coherent bundle of
chalcogenide glass fibers was used as an infrared image guide to realize th
e remote observation of inaccessible objects. Infrared images taken at 1/60
s intervals represented transient distributions of molecules that absorb t
he probe infrared light. Real-time observation of bursting CH4 and CO2 gase
s was successfully demonstrated. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S
