J. Golej et al., Aortopulmonary collateral artery embolization during postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation after arterial switch procedure, ARTIF ORGAN, 23(11), 1999, pp. 1038-1040
Aortopulmonary collateral arteries sometimes complicate cyanotic congential
heart defects. Combined with a relevant left-right shunt, this could resul
t in massive airway bleeding during and after corrective surgery. A preoper
atively diagnosed 1.2 mm small aortopulmonary collateral artery in a newbor
n suffering from transposition of the great arteries caused life-threatenin
g airway bleeding during surgery. Postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxy
genation (ECMO) was necessary, and coil embolization was performed on ECMO
to terminate pulmonary bleeding.
