Gorceixite, ideally BaAl3(PO4)(PO3OH)(OH)(6), formed by the alteration of a
patite in fossil bones found in Cretaceous sandstone in the Bauru Basin, so
uthern Brazil. The original fine structure of the bone is preserved. The pr
esence of gorceixite was established using X-ray powder diffraction, electr
on-microprobe analyses and optical microscopy. No convincing evidence was f
ound to indicate a source of Ba and Sr required for the replacement of Ca i
n the bone phosphate.
