Using column and thin-layer chromatography, the authors investigated the pr
esence of carotenoids in the carapaces and muscles of freshwater crayfish s
pecies. Fifteen carotenoids were found, among which canthaxanthin, adonixan
thin, and astaxanthin were predominant. The highest carotenoid content was
revealed in the carapaces of Pacifastacus leniusculus and Astacus astacus a
nd in the muscles of Astacus leptodactylus and Orconectes limosus.
